Flashback Friday: A birthday

Writing this post as if Ethan wrote it himself. I hope you enjoy reading through the eyes of a preemie.

Here I am the day mommy told
me my 2nd cousin was here!
4 lb 15 oz!

A year ago I was laying in the NICU when I got the news!  I was going to be a "big" cousin (well we're related somehow anyway!) I couldn't wait when I heard, but this was not the plan for our baby cousin to be born yet!  She was a month early! I was a little nervous! Nonetheless, the doctors said it must be so.  A preemie she would be.  I said a prayer for her that day and told her it would be ok! There are a lot of babies around me that have been born early! The NICU is full of preemies!  They say I'm a preemie. I was born 3 months early.  With 2 sisters sharing my space, there just wasn't enough room and I had to get out of there! You see, our mommies' (who are cousins) due dates were 1 day apart.  Our mommy was due to have us on August 6th (we came on May 16th!) and our cousin's mommy was due to have her on August 7th!  Our cousin couldn't wait to see the world so here she was! A whopping 4 lb15 oz! Small but mighty her dad would say.  That's what my mommy and daddy said about me sometimes too! On the day my cousin was born, guess what? I weighed the exact same as she did! I was 4 lb 15 oz too! She had to spend a few days in the hospital with her mommy too! It's not so bad! She beat me home though!

Here I am today! As you can see
I'm happy, healthy and full of life
19 lb 5.5 oz
Now it is a year later from that day that I found out I was having a baby cousin!  What a year it has been.  It has been a year of countless doctors appointments, a few outings, a few visits from friends and family and many firsts for us! It has been a year of milestones for the whole trio and our baby cousin too!  We've added some weight and length, started crawling, pulling to stand, eating solids and drinking from sippy cups and I (Ethan) have 6 teeth (4 on the top and 2 on the bottom)!  Looking forward to another great year! Wait til you read next week's flashback Friday! It's a special one indeed! Until then, pray for all preemies, those in the NICU and those out! We're all little fighters!

Congratulations to a special friend in Ohio who just left the NICU there yesterday after 11 months!

  1. Awesome story! How funny that he was the same weight as his 2nd cousin on the day she was born when he was a couple months old already.

None of my cousins, 2nd cousins, and I share an exact birthday but many of us share a birth month and we love it! In a way, it's a good thing that the trio and their cousin don't have to (although the trio COULD have waited a couple months... :P)

  2. How long did your cousin's baby have to stay in the NICU? Seems like if they make it past 35 weeks there sometimes isn't a NICU stay. It's always scary to deliver early, though. So tough. Glad age had you around!! Mateo was 4 lbs 4 oz at birth (32 weeks) an Alex 5 lbs 8 oz (34 weeks).

  3. Her baby was in the hospital just an extra week or so! I don't believe she was in a NICU setting either. Just had a feeding tube for a few days while she figured eating out!
